This happened to a friend last week and it has me paranoid about my own car. He kept putting off the timing belt replacement because it seemed expensive and the car was running fine. Then one day on the highway, the belt snapped and the engine basically destroyed itself. Now he needs a whole new engine. I started reading about the importance of preventing bigger damage with early fixes and found a really detailed article that explains how a small maintenance item like a belt can save you from a catastrophic failure. It also talked about how our heat here makes belts wear out faster. I am booking my car in for a belt inspection tomorrow. Anyone else have a close call with something that could have been prevented?
